The Turn of the Cards: Synopsis
Location: Cirencester, England circa 1900.
Act I
Scene 1: The Romani Camp (Outside Cirencester, England)
Katrina (Phuri-Dai/Spiritual Leader) introduces the audience to Tarot cards, highlighting the Page of Cups as a symbol of self-discovery. She then leads the Romani tribe in an energetic opening number.
Song: "The Dance of Life" – A high-tempo, ensemble song weaving the four Tarot suits (Rods, Cups, Swords, Pentacles) into a celebration of life, love, and fate.
Scene 2: The Overstreet Stable yard & Main Hallway
When Angela (Governess) and Devin (Valet/Stable Master) return from an afternoon horseback ride, Angela notices a deep scar on Devin’s arm, which he quickly evades explaining. After Angela leaves, Devin sings about his secret love for her.
Song: "Truly Mine" – A romantic ballad where Devin admits how Angela has changed his dark life, expressing hope that she will be his.
Later, Katrina arrives at the estate asking for charity. She shocks Gracie (Housekeeper) and Mrs. Overstreet (Matriarch) by revealing details about her deceased firstborn son, Nathaniel, and her surviving children. Katrina hands Mrs. Overstreet a carved stone as a warning of an approaching evil surrounding her eldest son, Matthew, before fleeing. Gracie and Mrs. Overstreet dismiss it as nonsense.
Scene 3: The Main Hallway (A Few Hours Later)
Matthew (Eldest Son) returns early from Oxford, bringing idealistic worldview changes that spark friction with his traditionalist father, Reginald (Patriarch). When Matthew and Angela meet, they experience an instant, unexplainable connection.
Scene 4: The Overstreet Library (Later That Day)
While teaching the Penny, Felicity, Agnes (The Overstreet Sisters), Penny, who is reading Wuthering Heights asks Anglela about the cruelty of love and fate. Matthew eavesdrops from the sidelines and is mesmerized by Angela’s response to the girls on true love.
Song: "Love From Inside" – Angela sings to the girls about how true love warms the soul and guides the heart.
Matthew enters as the girls leave, Matthew tries to understand his uncanny connection to her . As she departs, Angela warns him to be careful with his choices. Later, he asks his father about his feelings towards Angela. He strictly warns Matthew that Angela is far below their social station.
Song: "New Found Hearts" – A soliloquy where Matthew questions if his intense attraction to the governess is fate or destiny.
Scene 5: The Overstreet Library (The Next Morning)
Upon an unexpected meeting in the family's library, Matthew and Angela bond deeply over a shared appreciation for Emily Dickinson.
Song: "Library Song" – A duet utilizing Emily Dickinson’s poetry to express inner loneliness and mutual connection.
After Angela leaves, Matthew meets Devin an shares old childhood "treasure map" Devin made, reminding him of their sacred oath as "blood brothers". Matthew confesses his feelings for Angela, completely unaware that Devin secretly considers her his own destiny.
Song: "Lovely Lady" – A counterpoint song where Matthew and Devin simultaneously sing about their longing for Angela, highlighting their rising romantic rivalry.
Scene 6: The Overstreet Stable yard (A Few Hours Later)
Matthew surprises Angela and Devin with an afternoon horseback riding trip. Devin aggressively opposes it, arguing it is highly inappropriate for a wealthy man to go out with a governess without a chaperone, thus risking her livelihood. The two friends get into a fierce argument. Overwhelmed by the tension, Angela rejects the flowers and walks away. Matthew blaming Devin, hands him a broom, tells him to “clean up this mess,” and leaves.
Scene 7: The Grand Hallway & Ballroom / Courtyard (That Night)
At Matthew's welcoming party, Angela meets Matthew outside the Ballroom. He is anxious about being late and facing his father's dissapointment. Angela encourages him to take a "leap of faith" and enter the ballroom together. Their bold waltz causes a stir among the high-society guests and upsets Matthew’s parents. As Matthew prepares to give a speech, Katrina crashes the room with a frantic prophecy of betrayal and tells Matthew to find her at "Fosse Way" tonight. Devin evicts Katrina as Angela goes to the courtyard for solace. Seeing Angela in the courtyard alone Matthew goes to her. He resolves to go to Fosse Way which makes Angela fearful of his safety. To calm Angela's fears, he gives her his signet ring, promising to return for it the next day. Devin watches them from afar, then approaches Angela after Matthew leaves and claims they are destined to be together; Angela rejects him.
Song: "Look In Your Heart" – Begun as a duet between Matthew and Angela, it transitions into a solo section for Devin, and finalizes as a trio exploring all three characters' anxieties.
Scene 8: A Clearing on Fosse Way (Later That Night)
Matthew finds Katrina, who gives him a Tarot reading forecasting heartbreak, separation, and a trial . She advises him to rely on his inner strength and promises that "karmic justice" will prevail.
Song: "Affairs of the Heart" – A haunting song sung by the unseen Romani intertwined with Katrina’s reading, foreshadowing how the heart dictates destiny.
After Matthew leaves, an unseen figure strangles Katrina to death with her own scarf and steals it.
Scene 9: The Roman Ruins Outside Cirencester (Later That Night)
Driven by jealousy, Devin seeks solace at his favorite place, the Roman ruins. He summons a dark force.
Song: "Incantation" – A dark magic ritual song performed inside a pentagram.
His spell summons an unseen Evil Presence. In exchange for his soul, the entity grants him a magical music box to place a love spell on Angela and produces Matthew’s stolen signet ring to frame him. The contract dictates everything must be completed within a fortnight, or all is lost. Devin accepts, completely abandoning his loyalty to Matthew.
Scene 10: The Overstreet Dining Room (The Next Morning)
Matthew explains his encounter with Katrina to his family. The young girls become frightened and Angela escorts them to their rooms. Inspector Green and Constable Higgins arrive with news of Katrina’s murder, revealing Matthew’s signet ring was found by her body. Matthew is detained at the estate while the Inspector prepares an arrest warrant.
Scene 11: The Overstreet Garden Pavilion (A Few Days Later)
Matthew finds Angela and confides his terror of being sent to the gallows. They console each other, and Angela vows her total support.
Song: "Courtyard Duet" – A duet song of shared fear, commitment, and loyalty.
Devin enters alongside the police to arrest Matthew. Before being taken away, Matthew asks Devin to protect Angela; Devin pledges his life to fulfill his request.
Scene 12: Matthew’s Jail Cell (A Few Days Later)
Matthew alone in his cell contemplates his predicament.
Song: "My Cause Was Right" – Matthew sings of his fears that his fight is a lost cause.
Mr. Overstreet visits the cell and suggests Matthew enter a plea of temporary insanity to avoid the death sentence. This will buy them time in an asylum until the real killer is found. Reluctantly, Matthew agrees.
Song: "My Cause Was Right" (Reprise) – Matthew sings about an uncertain look at his future.
Scene 13: A Holding Room at Cirencester Jail
Matthew says goodbye to his family and asks his parents to ensure Angela's safety while he is away. He is fitted into a restraining jacket for his transfer.
Song: "Maybe One Day" – Act I Finale. Matthew vows to prove his innocence, Angela ponders Matthew's future as Devin celebrates his impending victory, all intertwined with the Romani Chorus questioning who
will ultimately win.
Act II
Scene 1: The Asylum at Cowley
Confined to a grim asylum, Matthew defends his innocence to the other inmates, sparking a philosophical debate on what defines "normalcy".
Song: "Asylum Waltz" – A whimsical, dark musical number performed by the inmates comparing the standards of sanity and madness
Matthew meets Terrance (Asylum Keeper) who reluctantly listens to and gradually accepts Matthew's claims of innocence for the time being.
Scene 2: The Overstreet Garden Pavilion (Same Day)
With only days left on his dark pact, Devin finds Angela alone and coaxes her into accepting the mystical music box to soothe her anxieties.
Song: "Music Box Song" – A haunting duet that casts a powerful love spell over Angela.
The spell takes hold, and Angela blindly agrees with Devin that she will notify the family of their immediate marriage plans, fulfilling his eternal deal.
Scene 3: Devin’s Quarters & The Main Hallway
While cleaning Devin's quarters, Gracie discovers two pieces of incriminating evidence: Katrina's stolen scarf and a Romani "Rune of Shame". Meanwhile, Angela steadfastly informs Mrs. Overstreet of her wedding proposal acceptance. Sensing something is deeply wrong, she informs Mr. Overstreet who leaves to visit Matthew at the asylum for answers. Gracie presents the evidence to Mrs. Overstreet. Recognizing the stone as the exact one Katrina gave her, Gracie suggests she should visit Sophie, a young Romani fortune teller in the village marketplace.
Scene 4: The Marketplace in Cirencester (That Afternoon)
Mrs. Overstreet visits Sophie (Romani Fortune Teller), whose Tarot cards predict an unworthy man, a great struggle, and a victorious revelation of truth. When shown the stone, Sophie explains it is the Romani Rune of Shame, given only to outcasts who have committed disgraceful acts within the tribe. Mrs. Overstreet is left stunned by the implication that Devin is an outcast Romani.
Scene 5: The Asylum in Cowley (Late Afternoon)
Matthew meets Sophie (who is revealed to be Terrance’s wife). When Matthew names Katrina as the victim, they are devastated—Katrina was Terrance’s mother. Sophie shows Matthew the Rune of Shame, which Matthew instantly connects to the mysterious scar on Devin's forearm. Mr. Overstreet arrives and delivers the news of Angela's sudden wedding plans. They piece the truth together: Devin is actually Donatas, Terrance's estranged and dangerous brother, who used dark magic to orchestrate the frame-up. Sophie warns that if the wedding ritual is completed, the dark pact becomes permanent. Dismissing it all as "poppycock," Mr. Overstreet leaves to confront Devin directly. Knowing the family could be in danger and saving Angela from his plot. The three plan Matthew's escape.
Song: "Wedding Eve" – A high-stakes quartet balancing the desperate plotting of Sophie and Matthew against the dark triumph of Devin and Angela.
Scene 6: The Overstreet Main Hallway (The Next Morning)
Mrs. Overstreet confronts Mr. Overstreet with the evidence from Devin's room. Now seeing the Rune, he is finally convinced of Devin's guilt and has Sims (Butler) summon the Inspector. Matthew and Terrance arrive only to find that Devin and Angela have left. The two depart immediately upon hearing the arrival of the police. When the police arrive, Mr. Overstreet presents the evidence to exonerate Matthew. Having no idea of where Devin could hide, Gracie notes Devin's obsession with the nearby Roman Ruins, sending the authorities in hot pursuit.
Scene 7: The Roman Ruins
Devin prepares to bind their marriage with a dark ritual utilizing a family chalice and sacrificial lamb's blood. Just as Angela is about to drink, an escaped Matthew arrives with a protective potion provided by Sophie. Matthew tries to break the spell using real memories him and Angela have shared. When Angela reputiates him, he attacks Devin. During thier scuffle the potion bottle is broken and Matthew is knocked-out. Devin draws a sacrificial knife to kill him but his dark magic backfires. Devin is pulled into a supernatural reckoning, vanishing forever into an alternate world. The spell breaks, and Angela is restored to her senses.
Song: Look In Your Heart" (Reprise) – A tender reunion song between Matthew and Angela celebrating their freedom and commitment.
The play ends as Katrina reappears on stage, reminding the audience that life will always be a mysterious balance between fate, choice, and a perhaps a "Turn of the Cards".
